This is the only post on this book we are making so I'm gonna talk now about a couple different reasons why I liked this book. Dana was such a human character with human relationships and dropping her in the antebellum south provided so many opportunities to drive home how powerless she felt as an African-American woman. The intimate whipping scenes were disturbing, and give a slightly different perspective than reading it from a history book - the author uses fictional characters to show us a more nuanced sense of fear through Dana's eyes ¹ . Some other moments that come to mind are when Dana is forced to convince Alice to have sex with Rufus, communicating the intense feeling of powerlessness and dread slaves felt since there was absolutely no solution to the situation, only three different "poisons" to pick, and when Dana returns to an aging Tom Weylin with arrogance at first, before silencing herself and realizing that Tom didn't need physical strength himself...

Atonists as a genre of people

I wish I could give another modern example of Jes Grew like we talked about in class yesterday, but nothing comes to mind besides hip-hop, which we talked about already. Today I want to talk about how much I appreciate Reed's unapologetically postmodernist writing style and how it has provided me with a new, convenient way to think about the world around me. Hinckle is a "villain" if there ever was one. He has an eye patch, evil laugh, evil plan, and is hundreds of years old. He answers to a mysterious order that has seemingly one goal, which is to ruin other's fun. The Atonist creed ends with the line "Lord, if I can’t dance, No one shall." Reed is postmodernist in his writings of Hinckle in many areas. In  Ragtime,  we practically watched as Doctorow reached down his hand and wrote Houdini into the story in an unapologetically postmodern fashion, driving him down the street and crashing him into a pole in front of the family's house. The sheer over-the...

What would postmodernist history look like?

Image
(picture unrelated) I have vaguely connected my thoughts on movie reviews to postmodernist history. In this blog, I'll try to discuss "postmodernist history" a bit more and describe this connection I've made as best as I can. Reviews of movies and other entertainment (TV shows, video games, music) are subjective. I believe there is no objective rating for any type of entertainment. Though I think most people would agree with this statement, most people make the mistake of thinking a review's value is in how "correct" it is. I think a reviews true value is in how consistent it is with the author. Let's say you're reading a review by someone who historically has hated almost every Tom Hanks movie and almost every animated movie they've seen. Let's say this person watches Toy Story 4, an animated movie with Tom Hanks voicing one of the main characters, and leaves a 5/5-star review. From this review, you would have a pretty good understanding...

I like Houdini

Image
For my first blog post I wanted to analyze how Doctorow shows his skillful writing through Houdini as a character. Houdini adds a lot to the novel and has been really interesting for me to read. One of the first instances of Doctorow showing his power as a postmodernist author happens early in the novel, when the boy is basically daydreaming about how much he loves Houdini, and Houdini comes driving down his street and crashes in front of his house. I think it's a pleasant surprise for the reader, too. He may have been a slightly more recent memory for people who had read it closer to 1975 when it was published, but in my eyes Houdini is probably one of the only names from the early 1900's I would recognize and have literally any interest in as a character. I speak for myself here, but I'm sure someone else would agree. Houdini exemplifies how Doctorow often uses real and fictional elements in tandem to build his characters and narratives. He creates a narrative about Houdi...

Why Mother 3 is the best

Image
I was extremely reluctant to write about this topic. I'm already dreading the possibility of getting voted "Gaming addict" for the Senior superlatives, even though I'm not addicted I'm just good. But the game I am about to write about is different. It's a single-player, role-playing game called Mother 3 . If you know Ness or Lucas from Super Smash Bros., they are both characters from the Mother series. This is my favorite game of all time, a game I would like to experience again for the first time. I played this game because I like experiencing the "old but gold's." Whether it's 90's hip-hop or 60's films, I enjoy going back and seeing where these genres of entertainment started. In my head, Mother 3 was an "old but gold" game that was always raved about by old people on the internet. But, the game ended up being less "old" than I thought. The game had the same look the series had in the 90's in Mother 2 (tit...

MY MUSIC JOURNEY PT. 2

After building a pretty strong foundation in rock music, I was slowly drawn to Korean music and hip-hop through various influences over the rest of my time in high school. As in the last post, I bolded song titles and artists throughout this post and put them in a Spotify playlist if you would like to listen along. My first exposure to K-pop (besides, like, Gangnam Style in elementary school) was in Mary Walker's K-Pop Agora class during my Subbie year, but I didn't take a particular liking to it. A couple years later was my first encounter with KR&B, and although this is sort of a subcategory of "K-Pop," I felt much differently about it. Elijah introduced me to " Instagram" by Dean  for me to learn on guitar. I loved the mellow sound a lot more than the bright, pop sound of a lot of other "group" K-Pop I was recommended. I took an instant liking to artists like Dean and pH-1 especially. I also discovered the K-Indie genre while looking for ...
